A power meter is an instrument that measures electrical power, generally referring to a power meter that measures power in DC and low-frequency technology, also known as a wattmeter. A power meter usually consists of a power sensor and a power indicator. The power sensor is also called a power meter probe. It converts high-frequency electrical signals into electrical signals that can be directly detected through energy. Common power meters can be divided into DC power meters, power frequency power meters, variable frequency power meters, radio frequency power meters, and microwave power meters.
In ultra-high frequency and microwave frequency bands, the power meter can be divided into TEM waves and non-EM waves. In the coaxial system of TEM waves, although voltage and current have precise meanings, it is difficult to measure their absolute values. In a waveguide system, voltage and current lose their uniqueness because of the existence of different electromagnetic modes. In each frequency band and each transmission system, power is an important method to characterize the signal strength with a single value. Direct measurement of power in the RF range replaces voltage and current measurements.
Since the DC power meter is equal to the simple product of voltage and current, in actual measurement, a voltmeter and an ammeter are generally used instead. The power frequency power meter is the most commonly used power meter, and the power meter is often referred to generally refers to the power frequency power meter.
